Self-talk persists into adulthood. In fact, a form of self-talk is often employed by elite athletes and has been shown to improve their performance.
Unfortunately adult-self talk isn’t always as positive as the wonderful attitude displayed in the video below:
More often than not, our own self-talk is far more negative. Very often, our inner voices can be very critical of ourselves and our actions. In fact, it is quite telling that a search for “self talk” on YouTube brought up a plethora of videos meant to help young people deal with self-harm, depression, and intrusive negative thoughts.
